Motorcyclists Ride Despite Change of Season

Temperatures and tree leaves will soon be falling across the state bringing an end to summer and this year’s peak riding season. Despite the signs of the changing season, riders aren’t storing their motorcycles just yet. Instead, they’re enjoying rides amidst the colorful foliage.

While the symbols of fall will provide riders with a beautiful setting, it will also require them to take extra precautions as cool temperatures and leaves on the ground could easily become risks to themselves, other riders and drivers. Shorter days and less sunlight should also be considered before riders hit the road as riding into the sun and in the dark can be hazardous.

Fall Safe Riding Tips

· A layer of dry leaves on the road will reduce traction, and mixed with moisture and cool weather can become slick. Remember, the temperature underneath a layer of leaves can be five to seven degrees colder than the air above, so slippery conditions are more likely.

· Dress in layers to help beat the cooler temperatures as cold hands and feet don’t react well.

· Wear reflective pants and a reflective jacket when riding in the dark.

· Before heading out, give some thought to the sun’s position along the route. If you’re riding eastward, try to do so in the afternoon or evening so the sun is behind you. If westward bound, set out in the morning and keep the sun to your back. Overall, try and take the north or southbound trips late in the afternoon and do east or westward traveling according to the sun’s position earlier in the day.
